Personal Loan in India: Find options that may suit your profile.

20 July, 2026

You answered the quiz, and your profile indicates that you are looking for a personal loan in India. This type of finance may be used for family expenses, education, medical emergencies, consumer purchases, debt consolidation, home improvements, wedding costs, travel or other personal commitments.

In India, personal loans are mainly offered by banks and Reserve Bank of India-regulated non-banking financial companies. The final loan amount, tenure, interest rate, fees and approval depend on income, employment or business stability, existing EMIs, credit history, documents and the lender’s assessment.

What is a personal loan?

A personal loan is usually an unsecured loan repaid through equated monthly instalments, commonly called EMIs. “Unsecured” generally means that you do not pledge a house, vehicle or another asset as collateral. The lender still checks whether your income and current obligations support the requested EMI.

The currency used in India is the Indian Rupee, with the code INR and symbol . Larger amounts are commonly expressed in lakhs. ₹1 lakh means ₹1,00,000, while ₹10 lakh means ₹10,00,000.

How much may suit your requirement?

The useful amount is not always the highest limit displayed by a lender. A smaller loan may cover one urgent expense, while a larger amount may be considered for several costs or an existing debt balance.

₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh

This range may suit a medical bill, appliance purchase, urgent repair, short course, relocation cost or smaller family requirement.

Above ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh

This amount may be considered for education fees, wedding expenses, home repairs, travel or several expenses combined into one loan.

Above ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh

This range may suit larger renovations, hospital expenses, professional training or repayment of costlier balances.

Above ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh

A request in this range normally requires stronger income, stable employment or business cash flow and a satisfactory credit profile.

Above ₹10 lakh

Higher limits are available for eligible borrowers. ICICI Bank’s official personal-loan calculator currently covers amounts from ₹50,000 to ₹50 lakh, with repayment periods from 12 to 72 months. These are product limits and not amounts automatically offered to every applicant.

Personal loan online and instant-loan searches

People searching for finance in India frequently use terms such as personal loan online, instant personal loan, quick loan and loan app. An online process may let you choose an amount, calculate an EMI, complete identity checks and upload documents without starting at a branch.

“Instant” normally refers to the speed of the digital process, not guaranteed approval. A pre-approved message or eligibility result may still be followed by checks on income, bank activity, current loans and credit history.

For retail and digital loans, RBI rules require regulated lenders to provide a Key Fact Statement, or KFS, before the agreement. It presents important information such as the annual percentage rate, repayment schedule and all-in cost in a standard format. Charges that are not disclosed in the applicable KFS should not later be added to a digital loan.

Can you apply without a salary slip?

“Personal loan without salary slip” usually means that another form of income evidence may be accepted. It does not normally mean that a lender provides a loan without checking repayment capacity.

A salaried applicant may be asked for salary credits, bank statements, Form 16, an employment letter or payslips. A self-employed applicant may need bank statements, income-tax returns, GST records or business documents. A pensioner may be asked for records showing regular pension credits.

The exact requirements vary by lender and requested amount. PAN and Aadhaar may help complete identity verification, but they are not always the only documents needed.

Choosing the tenure and understanding the EMI

Common personal-loan tenures include 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months. Some lenders offer 72 months or longer for eligible applicants. For example, ICICI Bank currently presents tenure choices from 12 to 72 months, while Axis Bank advertises personal-loan tenures that may extend to 84 months.

A shorter tenure usually creates a higher EMI but lowers the total interest paid. A longer tenure reduces the monthly instalment but can increase the total repayment amount.

Consider someone borrowing ₹2 lakh for medical expenses. A 36-month EMI may feel easier each month than a 24-month EMI, but the longer option will usually cost more overall because interest is charged for an additional year.

Before accepting an offer, check the amount actually credited, EMI, number of instalments, annual percentage rate, processing fee, taxes, insurance if included, late-payment charges, foreclosure conditions and total repayment.

How does your credit profile affect the application?

Credit history is an important part of personal-loan assessment, but having no credit history and having a low credit score are not the same situation.

When you are new to credit

A first-time borrower may have no previous loan or credit-card record and may be described as new-to-credit. The lender may then place more weight on salary credits, job continuity, business income, account activity, current obligations and the amount requested.

The first offer may be smaller or have different terms, but the absence of a previous credit score does not automatically mean rejection. TransUnion CIBIL defines new-to-credit consumers as people who do not have a score at the time of loan origination.

When your CIBIL score is low

A standard CIBIL Score ranges from 300 to 900. A higher score generally indicates lower credit risk, although lenders also review income, existing debt and their own eligibility policies.

Late EMIs, overdue card balances and high outstanding debt may affect the credit profile. A lender may respond by offering a smaller amount, changing the tenure or rate, requesting more documents or declining the application.

CIBIL is the most widely recognised name, but India has four RBI-registered credit information companies: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.

Individuals whose credit history is available are entitled to one free full credit report, including the score, once in a calendar year. Incorrect information may be disputed with the relevant credit bureau.

Can existing debts be combined?

A personal loan may sometimes be used to pay credit-card balances or several existing loans, leaving one EMI to manage. This can make payment dates easier to follow.

However, a lower EMI does not necessarily mean a lower total cost. If the new loan extends the repayment period, total interest may rise. The meaningful comparison includes the balances being closed, foreclosure charges, new annual percentage rate, processing fees and total repayment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply using only PAN and Aadhaar?

They may be enough to begin identity verification, but the lender can still ask for income, employment, bank-statement and address documents.

Can I get a personal loan without a CIBIL score?

You may apply as a new-to-credit borrower. The lender may assess income, account activity, work stability and current obligations.

Does a low CIBIL score always mean rejection?

No. It may affect the amount, rate, tenure or decision, but lenders assess the complete application under their own credit policies.

Can self-employed people apply?

Yes. Eligible self-employed applicants may apply, although the lender may request business records, bank statements, tax returns or other income documents.

Based on the amount required, preferred tenure, employment status, income and current obligations, you can review personal-loan options that may suit your profile.

You may be redirected to an external comparison tool or financial institution. Final approval, loan amount, repayment term, interest rate, fees and conditions are determined only by the provider after assessing the application.
