Obesity is a complex disease in which one has excessive body fat. It is not only an aesthetic issue. It is a medical issue that increases the risks of diseases and health issues such as cardiac diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer (1).

There are many reasons why people have such a hard time avoiding obesity. In general, obesity is a result of a combination of hereditary factors with the environment, personal diet and exercise options.

The positive side is that even a modest loss in weight can improve or prevent health issues related to obesity. Change in diet, an increased level in physical activity and changes in conduct can lead to weight loss. Prescription drugs and procedures to lose weight can be additional options to treat obesity.

The FDA has approved certain drugs that can help reduce long term weight (2)

For its approbal, the FDA considered the results of four clinical trials of 28 weeks in more than 2,600 patients that received Wegovy. The average age of the participants was 46 and 74$ were women with an average weight of 231 pounds. By the end of the treatment they lost an average of 12.4% of their weight. Another sstudy included people over 55 on average with type 2 diabetes and average weight of 220 pounds of which 51% were women. In this case, participants lost 6.2% of their initial weight on average.

Wegovy is not a free pass to your organism and has several potential side effects which may include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdonimal pain, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia (indigestion), dissyness, abdominal distension, burping, hipoglucemia (low blood sugars) in patients with type 2 diabetes, flatulence, gastroenteritis y gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Furthermore, this drug is contraindicated for patients with history (either personal or family) of medullary thyroid carcinoma, in patients with a rare disease called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or in people with an allergy to semaglutide or any other component of its formula. The therapy is expected to be available in late July in the United States, where obesity and overweight affect 70% of adults, and it is essential that a health professional evaluates and monitors the administration of this drug.
